Artistic album by Jennifer Kahn Anatoly Kryvolap and the Ukrainian Sublime

In late January 2015, a new album by the American art critic Jennifer Cahn, Anatoliy Kryvolap and the Ukrainian Sublime, was inaugurated in Kyiv. According to Lidia Lykhach, Director of Rodovid Publishing House, which published the book, this was their first English-language project, dedicated to modern art in Ukraine.
Anatoliy Kryvolap and the Ukrainian Sublime is an academic research aimed to prove that modern Ukrainian art is an integral part of the modern world and the quintessence of modern Ukraine,’ explained she.
Jennifer Cahn’s acquaintance with Ukrainian art started far back in the past, however Kryvolap’s artworks came in her sight only a year ago and immediately aroused her vivid interest. She repeatedly came to the artist’s house in Zasupoyivka to interview him and, as Lidia Lykhach ironically put it, strong-armed him into answering her American questions.
Jennifer Cahn presented her perception of Anatoly Kryvolap’s works as part of Ukrainian and global art history. The critic did not put stress on the fact that Anatoly was regarded as Ukraine’s most expensive artist. ‘He is known for record high hammer prices at most prestigious auction houses but few people have ever gone any further to find out what makes his artworks so appealing for private collectors. Kryvolap’s abstract landscapes painted in bright strokes exude the spirit of the new independent Ukraine – rural and yet dare and potent as it arrived in the 21st century, with the hard experience under the belt,’ the author says.
Several days later the American presentation of the album, set up by Rodovid Publishing House, took place as part of the annual gathering of art critics, publishers and journalists held in New York on 11-14 February.
